WiFi
From TreoCentral
WiFi, or 802.11b and 802.11g, is a wireless networking protocol. It has become very widespread in recent years. To date, there is no Treo with built-in WiFi and support for WiFi varies from Treo to Treo. It is noteworthy that Palm has stated that with the high speed wireless networks available directly from cell phone carriers, such as EVDO, that WiFi may not be as essential as it once was.
PalmOS Treos: Treo 600, Treo 650, and Treo 700p
The Treo 600/650 does not suppport WiFi, mainly because of limitations in Palm OS. There are manufactures making SD slot compatible WiFi cards, however they have claimed that the Treo 600 does not provide enough power through the SD slot to support a WiFi, or 802.11b/g card.
Back in 2004, TreoCentral member Shadowmite managed to get a driver for the Palm SD Card to work. The driver "takes over the network connection/library... COMPLETELY! Once installed, you can not access vision UNTIL you hard reset and get it off the phone. Maybe with some more time we can find a way around that". The phone voice part of the Treo still remains functional.
There is, however, a WiFi sled available that provides WiFi networking at the cost of a significant increase in bulk.
The Enfora 1502 is the sled for Treo 650. Seems to work well with D-link router on cable but the Netgear router I have does not want to work with the sled. The Enfora site could not give answers why or a fix problem. I guess there have not been enough users yet to get a good how to forum going. Maybe tc wiki can draw them out..Played with the 700p with data plan in a Circuit City and the sled was faster and seemed to have the same amount of freeze ups.
It seems to be necessary to disconnect and reconnect occasionally to get past the sled freeze ups.I do not have a data plan to compare with.
Windows Mobile Treo: Treo 700w/wx
The Treo 700w/wx do not have WiFi built-in, but it does generally work better with a SDIO WiFi card that can be inserted into the SD card slot at the top of the Treo.
The Socket Go Wi-Fi! E300 and Palm Wi-Fi Card are known to work with the Treo 700w/wx.
The Socket Go E300 SDIO does not support WPA encryption. You're better off with the Palm Wi-Fi SDIO card for stability.
