Using the Treo in a store
From TreoCentral
The Treo isn't restricted to just helping you communicate with the outside world. It can also help you make informed decisions when you go out to buy something. From a simple a barcode, the Treo can get you information on the product itself, prices out in the market, and even user opinions. And the best part is, it's all available for free! All you need is one piece of software, the rest is done over the internet. You will need Barcode/13 to read barcodes using the Treo's camera, and a data plan to use the internet. You can get Barcode/13 from http://mytreo.net/downloads/godownload-754-1.html.
1) Find a product!
2) This step is optional, but it's really fun and just plain cool. Use Barcode/13 to scan the barcode of the product. If it doesn't scan, then copy the numbers under the barcode using 0's at the beginning to make the length of the code 13 digits. This code will only be used to find product information, not market prices and opinions.
3) Go to http://www.esotericnet.com/treo/barcode.html and enter the code in the UPC field, then click Submit. This will take you to a description of the item. If your item is not described, and you have the time, please write one up, it helps everyone else.
4) Go back to http://www.esotericnet.com/treo/barcode.html and enter the products name in the eBay field to look up the item on eBay, or in the Epinions field to lookup user opinions on the item.
There is another more "mobile friendly" application available for free called ScanBuyShopper. Since it is a J2ME application, it isn't supported on Treos, however there is a WAP page you can use on both Blazer and Pocket Internet Explorer at http://search.scanbuy.com.
The above site was developed as a temporary replacement until the application is supported.
