On this page should go all the various forms of resetting your Treo.

Soft Reset

A soft reset is essentially a re-boot of your Treo, much like rebooting a desktop. Certain software will automatically perform a soft reset in installation (much like software requiring a reboot on your desktop). Occasionally, especially with the Treo 700w/wx, it is helpful to soft reset your device to clear out any weird processes that may be making it act strangely.

To perform a soft reset on any Treo, simply press the reset button on the back of the phone. The Treo 600, Treo 300, Treo 270, Treo 180g and Treo 180 all require that you unscrew the tip of the Stylus to reveal the reset pin. Newer Treos require that you remove the battery cover to access the reset button. Finally, on newer Treos you can also simply remove the battery briefly and then replace it.

There are also many free peices of software that can perform a soft reset without requiring you to unscrew your stylus. This thread on TreoCentral's Discussion Forums provides many options.

Hard Reset

For the Treo or any other Palm device all you have to do is first backup all your data. A Hard Reset will erase all information on yout Palm handheld. First press the reset pin and hold down the power button at the same time. Release the pin but still hold down the power button. Once the Palm Logo comes up release the power button. You should then see a message that says, "Erase all data?" If you have your Treo all backup and you want go ahead press the up button on the 5-way navigator. If you don't want to press any other button on the Treo.

Warm Reset PalmOS Treos

A "Warm Reset" is analogous to booting a Windows comptuer into "safe mode." It prevents any of the various extensions, add-on programs, etc from working. This is often useful when there is a buggy application that is loading automatically and causing the Treo to behave strangely.

To do a warm reset, hold down the "up" button as you press the reset hole. The Treo will boot up as normal, but many fucntions will not work, including the phone. For this reason, you must soft reset after you are finished with whatever it is you're doing after the warm reset.

Factory Reset, Sprint Treo 600

CAUTION! USE WITH CARE! From the phone dialpad enter ##774 then click the dial button. This code allows you to reset the phone to its factory default settings. Be careful with this one!

In-cradle Reset

The In-Cradle Reset will reboot the recharge circuitry. Here's how to perform an in-cradle reset:

1- Connect your treo to its wall charger If you are using a power cradle, make sure the power adapter is attached to the cradle or cable and plugged into a live power outlet.

2- Without lifting the Treo off the cradle or cable, perform a soft reset (see above).

Battery Disconnect Reset - Treo 600 only

IF you've tried everything to fully reset your Treo and conthing else has worked, consider trying a battery disconnect reset.

Use this procedure only as a last resort. Be sure your device is backed up, because you will loose all data on your Treo (except the standard apps).

This procedure is similar to a hard reset (see above), except that it disconnects all power to the unit. Power is restored upon the next connection to a physical power source (a cradle or cable).

1. Make sure the Treo is disconnected from all power sources.

2. While holding down the keys: k, Backspace - push the reset button with the paper clip for 4 seconds.

3. Release all keys.

4. Allow device to sit for 60 seconds.

5. Connect the Treo to a power source and turn it on by pressing the power button.

Zero Out Reset

The Zero out reset applies only to devices with non-volitale RAM (i.e. the Treo 650 and Treo 700p or Treo 700w/wx). It is designed to overwrite all of your data with random data to help protect it should you sell your Treo. Be absolutely positive your data is backed up before attempting this as it will be impossible to recover anything from the phone afterwards.

1. connect your Treo to the HotSync cable. Make sure the Treo is fully charged.

2. Press the power button while holding down "Up" on the 5-way and press the Hotsync button on the hotsync cable.

3. While holding down those three buttons, press the Reset button. Yes - this is going to ve very awkward, but Palm has done that intentionally.

4. Your Treo will appear to be dead for several minuts - possibly up to 15 minutes. After it reboots your data should be entirely erased.

Performing a Factory Reset before your Palm device changes ownership or is sent away for repair

Palm's knowledge library lists an alternative way to "zero out" 700P devices that can be found at ID: 15574 in their support knowledge library

Factory Reset for Treo 700p smartphones

If you've set a password on your smartphone, any hard reset will automatically become a Factory Reset. With this method, you'll enter a password and then perform a hard reset.

  1. On your smartphone, launch the Security application.
  2. If the Password box says "Unassigned," tap the box and create a password for your smartphone.
  3. Once the password has been set, disconnect your smartphone from the AC charger and take off the battery cover. Do not remove the battery yet.
  4. Hold down Power/End .
  5. While holding down Power/End , remove the battery. Then insert it again.
  6. While still holding Power/End , the screen will show the Palm logo and a progress bar. Then the circular Palm Powered logo (orange) will appear. Release the power button when you see the Palm Powered logo (blue with silver).
  7. A message will appear warning that you are about to erase all the data stored on your smartphone. Press UP.
  8. If you performed this reset correctly, the screen will go blank after several minutes, and you will not be able to turn on your device. The charging LED will not light up. (any other activity - such as the Palm OS logo and then the Applications launcher appearing - means the reset was performed incorrectly; try again)
  9. Your device will appear "dead." To wake up your smartphone, perform a soft reset.
