RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is a type of memory used in computing devices.

The Treo 600 and earlier Palm OS models contain only volatile RAM -- if the battery is removed for more than a minute or two, all data is lost. The Treo 650 and later Palm OS models contain non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) as well -- the battery can be removed indefinitely without loss of data. NVRAM is slower and more awkward to use than volatile RAM, so these models also contain a smaller amount of volatile RAM (the "DB cache") and copy data to it for short-term use. Thus, it is possible for an operation to fail for lack of space in the DB cache, while plenty of NVRAM remains (the Launcher reports plenty of "Free Space").
