How to disconnect from Blazer on newer Treos

Overview

I don't know why, but Palm did away with the "Disconnect" option in Blazer starting with the Palm Treo 680. This isn't the biggest disappointment on earth, but it is still annoying. While in Blazer on the Treo 650, you could click on Blazer in the upper left or click on Menu and there was an option to Disconnect. On the Treo 680 and Treo 755p, there is no disconnect option under Blazer to choose from.

I would "think" (don't know for sure) that staying connected to the internet on the Treo 680 and Treo 755p would drain the battery. Well, with the 680 and 755p having the smaller batteries, I don't keep Blazer connected. I close it out as soon as I'm finished browsing the internet. I don't think that leaving the internet connected would add data charges to your account unless you were actually transferring files. I still prefer to disconnect when I'm finished with the internet.

What to do?

So with the newer Treos when you want to disconnect from Blazer, you have to go back to the Home page on the Treo. Then you have to go to Preferences, then click on Network. And then you can click on "Disconnect". Of course you can always turn your phone off and back on too. It was sure much easier to disconnect when Palm had that option under Blazer.

A kind TreoCentral reader wrote to me and told me another way to disconnect from Blazer. He said that he uses a Free program from MetaViewSoft called NetworkDown. I downloaded this app on my Treo 680 and you just click on the program on the Palm homescreen and NetworkDown auomatically shuts down Blazer. So this will at least save you the extra steps of going to Preferences and then Network and having to click "Disconnect".

There are a few threads on the TreoCentral Forum about this Blazer disconnecting issue. Some people [say] that the internet connection will disconnect after about 10 minutes of inactivity. In another [thread], Bill Gamble mentions [Reset Netlib], another free utility to disconnect from the web.
