Overview
Do you like to read? Well, if you do and you happen to be new to the world of Treo's and the world of mobile gadgets in general, you'll be happy to know that you can read books on your Treo, whether you have a WM Treo or a PalmOS Treo. These electronic books are called E-books. E-books come in several different formats like eReader, Mobipocket PalmOS, Mobipocket WMMicrosoft Reader for Pocket PC, Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader (Portable Document Format), etc.
Where can I find E-books?
That's a very good question. You need to find some e-books of your own choice to read. Maybe you like horror and science fiction books. Or perhaps you enjoy adventures, thrillers, and mysteries. Maybe you like reading books about history or biographies. Below are just some of the places where you can find e-books and some provide Free e-books:
- Project Gutenberg
- Manybooks.net
- Free-eBooks.net
- fictionwise
- Adobe Free eBooks
- Planet PDF
- Microsoft Reader
- eBookLobby
- MemoWare
- eReader.com
- Bartleby.com E-book Store
- University of Virginia Library
How do I get the e-books on my Treo?
eReader is a program for viewing Palm Digital Media electronic books. eReader, formerly Palm Digital Media/Peanut Press, comes on most if not all Palm devices. You can download this software from your device CD. eReader usually has some free and sample e-books. Once you download eReader onto to your Treo, you are ready to start reading. And don't forget the other formats mentioned earlier in this article.
So you've looked at one of the sites listed above and have found an e-book that you'd like to put on your Treo. Whether the e-book is free or it's one that you've paid for, just download the file to your computer and then use the Palm Quick Install and hotsync the e-book to your Treo. If you have eReader installed on your Treo, the e-book will go directly to your eReader app.
How do I read my e-books?
Once you have hotsynced your e-books to your Treo, click on the eReader app. You'll see a list of the e-books that you've downloaded. Click on the e-book that you'd like to read or highlight the book of your choice and then click on "Open". Once you've opened the e-book file, you are ready to start reading your book. You can turn the page by tapping near the bottom of the screen to go to the next page or tap near the top to go back to the previous page. You can also use your 5-way navigational buttons; the down button to turn to the next page and the up button to go back to the previous page.
Notice the nice toolbar at the bottom of your screen? You can see the little clock that shows you what time it is. I love this feature! I'm always checking the time whenever I'm reading an e-book. There is also a little bar that shows how many pages you've read. As you read further into the book, the bar turns blue and you can see how far you've read. I always get sad when the blue has almost filled the bar because I know that I'm almost to the end of the story. The toolbar also has the Menu, Contents, Bookmark, Notes, Information, and a Back arrow. Another feature that I love is that when you exit the eReader, your current page is always saved so you don't have to worry about marking where you stopped reading.
So what are you waiting for? Go download some e-books and start reading! You can put hundreds and hundreds of e-books on your Treo. Your Treo will be a mobile library. Try carrying all those books around in the paper form. This is the easy way to do it. You'll have your books at the ready wherever you go. You might be sitting in a doctor's office, bored to tears. Pull out your Treo and start reading an e-book to pass the time. Just think how much faster that work commute will go by if you have a book to read. I usually read some in an e-book each night before I fall asleep. You can put the entire Bible on your Treo. I have found much comfort in being able to read scriptures wherever I am. Go fill up your mobile library and start enjoying reading books on your Treo today!
