How do I make my battery last longer

Overview

There are several issues that can make a Treo's battery seem to drain overly-fast. Generally speaking your Treo should last through a full day of moderate to heavy usage. Battery life on Treos has consistently improved with each successive update.

There are a few causes to battery drain that you may need to address:

Poor Network Coverage

If network coverage is intermittent or nonexistent, the radio on the Treo, epecially on the early models, will expend a great deal of energy trying to find and maintain a signal.

For the Treos with EV-DO capability, the frequent flip-flopping between EV-DO and 1xRTT also causes battery drain. This can happen even when the unit shows excellent network coverage. The problem is the unit sometimes cannot get good EV-DO coverage and it switches to 1xRTT. It also frequently tries to switch back to EV-DO, and thus the drain. If the unit moves around frequently and the flip-flopping occurs, the unit can be forced to 1xRTT only (for Treo 700p: Verizon Wireless users dial #*#EVDO# or #*#3836#, Sprint users dial ##EVDO# or ##3836#, then choose 'Disable Broadband'). But by doing so the unit only operates in 1xRTT mode.

You can find more information about this in the Battery drain article.

Extensive Data Usage

If your Treo is configured to check your email very often, you may experience significantly reduced battery life. To solve this you may want to reduce the frequency of Automatic email checks, switching to manually checking your email, or look into Push email solutions.

Leaving Bluetooth On

If you leave bluetooth turned on while you're not using it, it will drain your battery needlessly.

Leaving Wireless Keyboard Driver On

If you use an IR Keyboard, turn off the driver when you're not using the external keyboard.
