A: PalmOS Treos
By taking a look at the signal strength meter in the upper right hand part of the screen. If you have a data connection open but not active you'll see two small grey arrows on a CDMA Treo 650. On a GSM Treo 650, an inactive data connection is shown by a black triangle. On either Treo 650, if the data connection is active, the two arrows will be green.
On the Treo 700p, the meter will have indicators for the connections speed, whether it's 1xRTT or EVDO

By taking a look next the signal strength meter, you will see an icon that is either "EV" for EVDO or "1x" for 1xRTT
