TomTom Navigator 5 and 6

TomTom is a very popular GPS software package for PalmOS and Windows Mobile devices. You can buy a bundle that includes the software, a GPS receiver and assorted accesories. You can also buy them separately. Any bluetooth GPS receiver will work.

You can install the maps to the SD card via the Treo phone or via a SD card reader. The maps can take up as little as 80MB for national roadmap or as much as more than 1 GB for the U.S. map. You can just install the maps of the nearby states to save space. TomTom also offer the additional "Plus" service that gives you real time traffic infomation. The version 6 also add the feature of show your "buddy"'s location on the map if your friend is also using TomTom 6.

Garmin GPS 10

Garmin used to offer standalone Palm OS PDAs called "iQue" that have a GPS receiver and Garmin software (but no phone) built in. Now Garmin also offers the GPS 10, a hardware and software bundle that will provide GPS capabilities on PalmOS and Windows Mobile devices (including SmartPhones) other than those sold by Garmin. A review of Garmin 10 on TreoCentral's site can be found here. Another review (on another website, but written by a TreoCentral poster) is given here. The features of the GPS 10 are similar to those of TomTom Navigator in that both systems have three essential elements: (1) a Bluetooth GPS receiver, (2) software for the Treo that acquires position data from the GPS receiver and displays your position on the Treo screen and (3) desktop software that enables you to transfer maps to the Treo. Both TomTom and Garmin systems enable the user to see his/her current position, create routes to/from locations and search for "points of interest" (businesses, parks, intersections, etc.) or specific addresses. Both companies are frequently improving their hardware, software and maps; anyone interested in purchasing either system is advised to compare the current offerings from each company carefully before making a decision!

Mapopolis Navigator

RoadFinder

GPS software for the major cities in mainland China.

Delorme Street Atlas handheld

A GPS software for both Windows mobile and PalmOS devices, can work with the vendor's GPS unit or a 3rd party bluetooth. For suitable devices even has voice guidance. Functional, but no frills, very slow routing, and a FIND function that is so slow it can be arguably be not functional at all. Maps can be loaded to an SD, but need to be translated on a desktop PC and the result sent to the PDA later.
