Windows Mobile is the operating system that runs the Treo 700w/wx. Although generally referred to as "Windows Mobile", it is technically "Windows Mobile 5.0." This distinction is important because many applications are written for a specific version of Microsoft's smartphone software.

It is also important to note that software written for Windows will not work on Windows Mobile; neither will software written for the PalmOS. (But also see operating system emulators.)

Over the last few years, Microsoft has continued to create new versions of Windows Mobile for the variety of mobile devices in the market. A brief overview of the releases to date:

Pocket PC

Before Windows Mobile there was "PocketPC". Back then, a "PocketPC" referred to both the hardware and the software similar to how a palm device runs PalmOS. When Microsoft began supporting phones, they renamed the operating system to Windows Mobile. However, the term "PocketPC" or "PPC" is still often used to refer to the hardware.

Windows Mobile 2003

This is the third release of the PocketPC platform (aka Windows Mobile platform) and is the operating system for use on Pocket PC's.

Windows Mobile 2003 PE (Phone Edition)

This is the version of the operating system for use on Pocket PC's that also happen to be mobile phones. Essentially, this is the same as Windows Mobile 2003 but with added support for mobile phone handsets.

Windows Mobile 2003 SE (Second Edition)

This was an operating system upgrade from Windows Mobile 2003 and constitutes the fourth release of the PocketPC platform now known as Windows Mobile.

Windows Mobile 2003SE PE (Phone Edition)

This is the same as WM2003SE but with added support for mobile phone handsets.

Windows Mobile 5

This is the fifth release of the Windows Mobile platform and comes in four flavors.

  1. PPC edition for Pocket PC's. This is the baseline of all other flavors.
  2. PPC Deluxe edition. This is the same as the PPC edition but adds powerpoint and some other applications.
  3. Phone edition. This is the same as PPC Deluxe but with added support for mobile phone handsets.
  4. SmartPhone edition. This is a "lite" version of the phone edition which removes several applications and touchscreen support.

Windows Mobile AKUs

Windows Mobile AKUs (Adaption Kit Updates) are individual releases of each flavor of Windows Mobile. These are like WindowsXP Service Pack updates but are issued via the provider instead of direct to the consumer.
