Applications, or "apps" are Software programs. There are two basic kinds of apps:

  • Built-in apps are those that are included in the ROM. Some (such as Memos) are maintained by the operating system company (PalmSource). Others (such as SMS and Phone) are maintained by the device manufacturer (Palm).
  • 3rd-party apps are those that are installed by the user.

These categories can blur; for example VersaMail was a 3rd-party application that was bought by Palm and is now include in the ROM. Some 3rd-party applications are supplied by the manufacturer on CD, such as Documents To Go, for some models.
